— Stuart Whipps at The New Art Gallery Walsall

— 27 April 2008

Visual photographer Stuart Whipps currently has an exhibition of his work at the prestigious New Art Gallery Walsall.  The exhibition, titled Ming Jue, contains photographs of Longbridge and Nanjing and runs from 4 April to 1 June 2008.

Ming Jue is a reference to the re-branding of MG Rover since its move from the Longbridge plant in Birmingham to the new site for production in Nanjing, China. It is a term that translates as "modern gentlemen".

The exhibition brings together photographs of both the Longbridge and Nanjing plants.  Though relating to a very specific context, the images speak volumes about the transformation of heavy industry in the 21st centuary and its wider implications.

Stuart's work in the Visual collection, including some images from the Ming Jue series, may be viewed here.

A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition which runs at The New Art Gallery Walsall until 1 June 2008. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am - 5pm , Sunday 11am - 4pm. Admission is free.
